Ajit Poohla set on fire

The self proclaimed leader of the Nihang Tarna Dal Ajit Poohla, who was lodged in the Central Jail here following trial in a murder case, was today allegedly set on fire by two jail inmates.

Two youths identified as Navtej Singh and Harbhajan Singh had taken out diesel from a generator and set him ablaze inside his cell critically injuring him, Jail superintendent S P Singh said.

Poohla was facing trial in a case regarding the murder of seven members of a family in Beas area and the accused were also facing murder charges, he said.

The duo told police they had heard about the atrocities committed by Poohla and attempted to kill him but had no personal enmity with him, Singh said.

Poohla was as a terro in his border districts of Amritsar and Tarn Taran and was involved in number of cases of murder, robbery and rape. He was lodged in Amritsar jail following Punjab and Haryana High Court had cancelled his bail in one of the murder case. He was arrested by former government led by Captain Amarinder Singh following long persuation by Majha ex-servicemen league.

Poohla was rushed to the Civil Hospital here from where he was shifted to Guru Nanak Hospital where doctors said he sustained nearly 80 per cent burn injuries.
